Keeping Your Apartment's Power Bill Low

Apartment living doesn’t mean you can’t take steps toward a cleaner and healthier environment. Reducing your apartment’s monthly utility bill saves you money and preserves valuable natural resources that cannot be replaced. Keep reading to discover how you can take a few simple steps to reduce energy usage and remain comfortable in your San Diego luxury apartment.

Close the Curtains
San Diego features an average of 150 sunny days a year in addition to 120 partly sunny days. All that sunshine is good for your mood, but it can heat up your apartment and cause you to spend more money cooling it down again. Close the curtains on windows that receive direct sunlight to reduce solar heating in your apartment. If you aren’t willing to shut the light out completely, consider purchasing lighter curtains that block direct sunlight without completely darkening the room.

Use Your Microwave
Microwaves are fantastic appliances that really complement an on-the-go lifestyle. They also use up to 90% less energy than conventional ovens. When you have a choice between your microwave and your oven, use the microwave—you’ll enjoy your food much sooner and save on energy at the same time!

Turn It Off—Or Unplug It
Turn off the lights, the radio, the TV, and other energy-sapping appliances when you’re not using them. If you use a laptop, turn it off and unplug it at night to keep it from continually using energy when you’re not online. Keep in mind that many appliances and electronics keep using energy even when they’re turned off. Cell phone chargers, video game systems, and many other items should be unplugged when not in use to keep them from turning into “energy vampires” that cost you extra on your monthly power bill. If you can’t get to your outlets easily, plug multiple items into a single power strip instead. Turn off the entire power strip when you’re not using any of the electronics to save power and money.

Keep Your Fridge Stocked
Did you know that an empty fridge or freezer actually uses more energy than a full one? Keeping your fridge and freezer stocked will make life easier for you when you’re feeling peckish while also reducing your monthly energy bills. When placing items in your fridge, make sure to leave enough room for cool air to circulate through the appliance easily, or you’ll reduce its cooling efficiency.

Switch to CFLs
CFLs, or compact fluorescent lamps, are a great energy-saving solution for any apartment. These fluorescent light bulbs can take the place of traditional incandescent bulbs in nearly any fixture. CFLs can save you up to $30 apiece in energy costs over the lifetime of the lamp—and they’ll last much longer than incandescent bulbs, saving you even more money over the long term.
