Keeping Your Apartment Cool This Summer

A cool and comfortable apartment is the perfect haven when you want to beat the heat this summer. There are many ways to keep your Boston apartment cool without overtaxing your cooling system. Cooling your apartment efficiently will reduce the environmental impact of your everyday life while ensuring you enjoy lower utility bills all season long.

Use Window Coverings
UV radiation from the sun can heat the air inside your home and affect your comfort during the summer. Your Alta At The Estate apartment includes window coverings for both decorative and functional purposes. Using your window covers during the morning and afternoon on windows that face south can cut down on the amount of direct sunlight you receive through your windows. Even closing the shades partway to allow some light inside will still reduce the amount of solar heating that affects your apartment.

Use Your Microwave
Using your stove and oven to cook can actually heat up your apartment. However, using your microwave won’t contribute heat to the ambient air. During the summer, consider using your energy-efficient microwave whenever possible to prepare meals and snacks. You’ll save energy while cooking and prevent excess heat from escaping into your home and affecting the indoor temperature.

Use CFLs
Normal incandescent light bulbs create light by heating a filament inside the bulb until it glows. As a result, these bulbs give off heat when they create light. Although this heating effect is small, it can add up when you have many lights on at the same time. Switching to compact fluorescent lamps, or CFLs, can save you money on your electric bill while also keeping your apartment cooler. CFLs don’t produce light via heat, so they also won’t contribute to heating inside your apartment, no matter how many lamps you are using at once.

Use Nighttime Ventilation
If you want to let fresh air into your apartment, the best time to do it is at night. Keep your windows and doors closed during the day, when the weather is more hot and humid. (It’s also a good idea to check the weatherstripping on doors and windows; let your apartment maintenance service know if weatherstripping needs to be replaced.) When the temperature drops at night, open your windows to allow fresh air to enter. Opening two windows at opposite ends of your apartment can create a cross-breeze that will help to cool you off naturally without the need for air conditioning or a fan.

Use Fans
Fans are a great way to make any room in your apartment feel cooler and more comfortable. Both ceiling fans and portable fans will achieve the same effect. It’s important to note that a fan only makes the room feel cooler by creating a breeze, rather than actually reducing the temperature inside. Turn fans on only while you are in the room and turn them off when you leave to save energy. Placing a fan in front of an open window at night can also help to create a cooling breeze to keep you more comfortable while you sleep.

Lawn Events at the Lawn Events at the Larz Anderson Auto Museum
Brookline’s Larz Anderson Auto Museum hosts over 20 outdoor Lawn Events each year. This popular series of events grew out of the originally Anderson family’s Sunday afternoon tradition of opening their home once each week to allow public viewing of their collection of cars. Today, the Larz Anderson Auto Museum’s Lawn Events season runs from May until October, with events taking place on various Saturdays and Sundays. Each event focuses on a different make or genre of car, including Cadillac, Ford Lincoln Mercury, Studebaker, and even an “Extinct Car Day” that features automobiles from makers that are now defunct. The Lawn Events are family-friendly affairs that take place rain or shine. You can pre-register for these events to take advantage of discounted tickets.

Paulie's New Orleans Jazz & Blues Festival
After Boston, the nearby town of Worcester is the largest city in New England. 2014 marks Worcester’s eighth annual Paulie's New Orleans Jazz & Blues Festival, a celebration of jazz, blues, funk, country, and zydeco music. Past performers at the festival have included Walter Wolfman Washington and Shaka & The Soul Shakers. This year’s lineup features Bobby Paltauf Band, Roomful Of Blues, Marcia Ball, Little Freddie King, and many more. In addition to hosting live music, Paulie's New Orleans Jazz & Blues Festival also features Louisiana-style cuisine such as jambalaya, gumbo, red beans and rice, and biscuits and gravy. You can also enjoy Orleans-style SnoBalls, Cajun sushi, and a wide assortment of domestic and microbrewery beers as you rock out during this three-day event.

Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular Presents Boston’s Fourth of July
America’s fight for independence was birthed in Boston, making the Fourth of July one of the most important holidays in town. Boston’s Fourth of July celebration is held at the Hatch Shell on the Esplanade, situated beside the majestic Charles River. The Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular features a live concert by the Boston Pops set against a background of spectacular fireworks. Both events are free and are part of a larger two-day celebration of independence that spans July 3rd and 4th. The concerts begin at 7:30, with the July 4th event culminating in a stunning performance of Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture that includes real cannon fire. At 9:30, the amazing fireworks show will begin as seven barges on the Charles River shoot fireworks up to 1,500 feet into the air, lighting up the night sky. Each year, huge crowds gather along the banks of the river throughout the city to see this spectacular display.

Getting Your Luxury Kitchen Organized

Keeping your Vida Hollywood apartment’s kitchen organized and clean is one of the best ways to show off your stainless steel appliances and upscale finishes. Because the kitchen is often a hub of activity, it can also be a challenge to keep clean. Thankfully, a few simple tips can get you well on your way to a neat, organized, functional and beautiful luxury kitchen.

Organize Cabinets by Use
Your kitchen cabinets are a great place to store dishes, glasses, cookware, and many other items. However, the key to getting the most out of your kitchen cabinets is to organize them by use. Place items you use every day within easy reach. Put your serving bowls, party platters, and holiday dishware on the highest shelves in your cabinets, where these items are still convenient to access but will stay out of your way on an everyday basis. Also organize your pots, pans, and other cookware by use as well. Keep pans and pots near the oven and stove, because that’s where you’ll need them. Reserve a single drawer for all utensils, rather than spreading them out across your kitchen.

Tackle the Junk Drawer
Every kitchen has a junk drawer. Fortunately, yours doesn’t have to be a black hole or a disorganized mess. Keeping your junk drawer organized will make it a functional part of your kitchen. Use a drawer organizer to delineate space in your junk drawer, which often fills up with odds, ends, and items that can’t be easily stacked or stored. The dividers in the drawer organizer will solve this issue for you by keeping items contained within a limited amount of space. While you’re on an organizing spree, take everything out of the drawer. Throw away items that are actually junk—that extra pair of wooden chopsticks, the plastic straw, and those paper clips that are bent out of shape. Organize the items you want to keep by type, then place each group into a section of your drawer divider. You’ll be amazed at how quickly you’re able to locate the items you need when your junk drawer is under control.

Clear the Clutter
Your kitchen counters may be beautiful, but they can be hard to spot underneath piles of clutter and unnecessary kitchen gadgets. Reducing the amount of clutter on your counters will make your kitchen feel more open and keep that counter space available for cooking and baking. First, take a look at the appliances you’ve got out on your counters. Limit yourself to the two or three appliances you use most often (e.g., coffeemaker, toaster) and store the rest in your cabinets. If you’ve got papers or coupons everywhere, sort them by type and store them in a folder, box, basket or clip. Large utensils can be stored in a canister or vase, where they can be easily accessed when you need them for cooking. Use hooks to keep oven mitts, towels, and aprons organized and off the counters, where they can pose a fire hazard as well as create clutter.

The Hollywood lifestyle awaits you from your Vida Hollywood apartment, located near Hollywood Boulevard’s world-class dining, shopping, and entertainment. Just inside your front door, you’ll experience luxury finishes, amazing appliances, and additional touches like custom built-ins and mirrored closet doors. Quick and Easy Spring Cleaning Tips

Spring is a season of rejuvenation and renewal. It’s also a great time of year to freshen up your Wahiawa apartment home. Cleaning and organizing your apartment will make it feel roomier, more welcoming, and highlight its many desirable interior features. Even if you don’t have a lot of time for cleaning this year, focusing on a few key areas of your apartment will ensure the entire interior gains new life this spring.

Start With the Sinks
Whether you’re cleaning the kitchen or the bathroom, start with the sink. A clean sink and faucet can improve the look of the entire room. Kitchen sinks especially can gather food debris that makes your kitchen smell like it needs to be cleaned, even when it’s spotless. Start with the drain—you can maintain healthy plumbing and clear up any slow drains using a combination of hot water, baking soda, and vinegar. First, pour a pot of boiling water down the drain. Follow with half a cup of baking soda and half a cup of vinegar. Let the solution sit for a few minutes, then flush it down the drain with another pot of boiling water. If you have a garbage disposal, toss a few citrus peels inside and run the disposal for a fresh-scented sink; alternatively, you can pour a little lemon juice down the drain for the same effect. Shine your faucets for additional sparkle that will make the entire room feel fresh and clean.

Clear Up Clutter
Clutter can build up easily in your apartment, thwarting your attempts to keep it clean and organized. Even if you don’t have time to sort through all your clutter, use containers such as shoe boxes or plastic bins to keep it contained. Set aside a day in the future when you can go through the boxes and sort out items to keep or throw away. Mason jars, baskets, and other open or clear containers are an excellent way to keep small items grouped together within easy reach. Designate only one area of the coffee table, kitchen table, or other flat surface where you can stack mail, magazines, and notes to avoid letting the mess spread. Purchasing a small magazine rack or mail holder can also help you keep paper clutter organized.  Hooks and over-the-door organizers are other great ways to get clutter off floors or tables by storing it in the vertical space in your apartment.

Beautify the Bedroom
Your bedroom is another important space on which you should focus during your spring cleaning. Change your bedclothes for a fresh new look, which can revitalize the entire bedroom. Dust the room thoroughly for easier breathing at night—don’t forget areas such as ceiling fan blades, lamp bases, and headboards. Continue your cleaning spree into the master bathroom by changing out your bath towels as well. If you have a bath mat, now is a great time to wash it. Clean your bathroom mirror with a solution of one part vinegar and one part water using a coffee filter or microfiber cloth to eliminate streaks on the glass. A clean, shiny mirror will reflect more light, making your master bathroom feel larger and more inviting.

Enjoying the Beaches of Oahu

The island of Oahu features over 100 miles of coastline, all within easy driving distance from your serene Kalaeloa apartment in Kapolei. Whether you’re looking for a fun beach experience only a few miles from your home or plan to take a cross-island trip to the North Shore, there are a variety of beaches and activities you can enjoy all year long.

Waikiki Beach
Waikiki is one of the most famous beaches in Hawaii, hosting more than four million visitors each year. This thriving hub of activity features miles of beautiful coastline adjacent to hotels, resorts, bars, eateries, and shopping. Waikiki is located on Oahu’s southern shore, just a short drive from Kapolei and Honolulu. Its location provides beautiful views of the ocean and Oahu’s famous Diamond Head State Monument. Some of the most popular beach activities in this area include snorkeling, surfing, and sunbathing. Waikiki beach is a great place for beginner surfers, who can enjoy lessons in a fun, vibrant atmosphere. Other popular ways to explore the Pacific include canoeing, stand-up paddle boarding, and water tricycling.

Waimea Bay
Waimea Bay, located on the north shore of Oahu, is one of the most popular winter surfing spots in the United States. This beach is notorious for its large waves in the winter—in fact, Waimea Bay is historically the birthplace of big-wave surfing. Waimea Bay hosts a variety of world-class surfing competitions, including The Vans Triple Crown of Surfing and the Quicksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau competition. The waters of Waimea Bay calm down in the summer, offering beachgoers a more serene retreat for snorkeling and swimming. Waimea Bay features full facilities, making it a popular destination for families and singles alike.

Yokohama Bay
Located on Oahu’s western coast, Yokohama Bay is a popular secluded sunbathing spot that is rarely crowded, making it an excellent retreat for those wishing to avoid the bustle of busier beaches. Yokohama Bay is well known for its picture-perfect shore and waters, which stand out against the stunning backdrop of the Wai’anae Mountain Range. It is also a popular surfing location and one of the better places to spot dolphins out at sea. Hikers can take the trail from Kaena Beach State Park up to Kaena point, which offers scenic views of the island and the ocean from its lava shoreline.

Lanikai Beach
If you’re looking to visit one of the consistently top-ranked beaches in the world, head over to Lanikai Beach on Oahu’s eastern shore. Lanikai Beach’s sparkling white sand and calm, clear waters make it a picturesque retreat for swimmers, sunbathers, and picnickers. Two nearby islands, called the Mokuluas, are easily accessible via kayak. Although Lanikai Beach is small, it is easily accessible through public beach access paths and has been deemed one of the best places on the island to watch the full moon rise against the backdrop of the Mokuluas.

Your home at Kalaeloa is the perfect starting point for the beach adventure of your dreams. Whether you want to relax in the sun or catch some of the biggest waves in the world, your Kapolei home is right in the middle of it all! Eco-Friendly Apartment Cleaning Solutions

The benefits of living green are becoming more apparent every day. Reducing energy and water usage can save you money, while choosing eco-friendly cleaning solutions cuts down on the number of harmful chemicals in local water supplies. Greener cleaning solutions can also protect your health by minimizing your exposure to potentially toxic chemicals right at home.

Tile Scrub
You can scrub those shower and bath tiles into a glistening shine without the need for unsavory chemicals. Create your own tile scrub using baking soda and a mild dish detergent—simply combine 1/2 baking soda with a few drops of soap and mix. You’ll get a creamy texture like cake frosting, which you can use on a sponge to clean away dirt, grime, and soap or mineral residue. Rinse with clean water when you’re done for a sparkling clean bathtub or shower. The easiest way to use this scrub is to make a small batch each time you need it; however, you can store this product in an airtight jar if you add a teaspoon of vegetable glycerin to the mix, which will keep it moist.

Drain Cleaner
Keeping your apartment’s drains running smoothly doesn’t require a harsh, caustic chemical solution. First, pour 1/2 cup baking soda down your drain. Follow it with 1/2 cup white vinegar. Once these two ingredients mix, you’ll see plenty of foaming action. This foam will eat away at any organic residue that’s clogging your drain. Close the drain or cover it with a damp cloth for five to ten minutes, then open the drain and pour a pot of boiling water down to flush away any remaining mixture or residue. You can use this solution on a slow drain or clean your drains periodically to keep them performing as they should. Keep in mind that stubborn drains may need a few applications before the entire clog is cleared.

Window Cleaner
Clean windows allow natural light inside while providing you with an unhindered view of the city beyond your apartment community. In an empty spray bottle, mix 1/4-1/2 teaspoon mild dish soap with three tablespoons vinegar and two cups of water. Distilled water is best, as tap water might leave streaks or spots on the glass. Shake the bottle gently to mix the ingredients and you’re ready to go! Combine this cleaner with a rubber squeegee and microfiber cloth to get professional results.

All-Purpose Cleaner
To create your own eco-friendly all-purpose cleaner, all you’ll need is an empty spray bottle, 1/2 teaspoon washing soda, and a bit of liquid dish soap. Mix the washing soda with a few drops of dish soap and add two cups of hot water, then shake the bottle until the washing soda appears completely dissolved. This spray is safe for any surface and can be wiped away with a sponge or rag. If you’re looking for an all-purpose cleaner, deodorizer, and disinfecting solution that can be used around your apartment, mix equal parts white vinegar with clean water. Another great germ-killing solution (with a more pleasant smell) is a simple mixture of lavender essential oil and water. This spray will last indefinitely and doesn’t need to be wiped away.

Tips for a Great Moving Experience

Spring and summer are the most popular times to move into a new apartment. If you’re preparing to make Alta At The Estate your new Boston home, following a few helpful tips can make yourmove a breeze. Check out the suggestions below to enjoy a calm, collected, and carefree moving day.

Stay Hydrated
The Boston area is well known for its hot and humid summer weather. Moving is hard work, whether you’re carrying boxes or directing movers to do so for you. Make sure you stay hydrated during your move by bringing plenty of bottled water or sports drinks along in a cooler or ice chest. Avoid drinking soda, coffee, or alcoholic beverages, as these can actually promote dehydration. If you’ve hired movers (or solicited your friends and family), make sure to bring water for them as well—they’ll appreciate the gesture and get the job done more efficiently because they’ll feel healthy and hydrated.

Pack a “First Night” Box
It can be easy to overlook a few simple first night necessities during the commotion of a move. While you may be prepared with toiletries, pajamas, and bed sheets, there are a few oft-forgotten items you’re sure to need as well. Pack a “first night” box with items such as toilet paper, a shower liner and hooks, paper towels, trash bags, tissues, napkins, disposable plates, utensils, and cups, and all the chargers you’ll need for the devices you use every day. You may also want to include a power strip if you have multiple computer components and a pad of paper and a pen to jot down measurements, notes, or lists.

Clean Your Furniture
Whether your furniture is arriving in your new apartment in pieces or fully-assembled, moving day (or shortly thereafter) is a great time to clean every piece. You’ll have unparalleled access to every surface when your furniture is disassembled or sitting in the middle of an empty room. This is also a good time to dust or vacuum every drawer and crevice, giving your furniture new life that will enhance the feel of your new home. If you get the opportunity to do so, wipe down your furniture before it’s brought into your apartment. This can help eliminate the dust that is often associated with moving.

Fill the Closets First
Unpacking can be a long process, and it’s easy to become disorganized quickly. You can avoid this problem by filling your closets first. Tucking little-used items away in the closets immediately after your move will create more room for organization and unpacking in your main living areas. If you have boxes of items you won’t need for a while, you can simplify this process by placing the entire box in your closet to be dealt with later. Put suitcases, wardrobe boxes, and other clothing containers in your master suite’s closet immediately as they are brought inside so all your clothing is in one place. This can reduce difficulty when searching for items, especially if you need work clothes or other specific wardrobe items shortly after moving.

These tips are just a few ideas to inspire your move to Alta At The Estate of Watertown. Our chic, modern apartment spaces are available in one- and two-bedroom floor plans with plenty of indoor space and storage for you to enjoy. You’ll also love our ample outdoor parking and community amenities! Click through our website or stop by our apartment community today to see your future home in person!
