Enjoying the Beaches of Oahu

The island of Oahu features over 100 miles of coastline, all within easy driving distance from your serene Kalaeloa apartment in Kapolei. Whether you’re looking for a fun beach experience only a few miles from your home or plan to take a cross-island trip to the North Shore, there are a variety of beaches and activities you can enjoy all year long.

Waikiki Beach
Waikiki is one of the most famous beaches in Hawaii, hosting more than four million visitors each year. This thriving hub of activity features miles of beautiful coastline adjacent to hotels, resorts, bars, eateries, and shopping. Waikiki is located on Oahu’s southern shore, just a short drive from Kapolei and Honolulu. Its location provides beautiful views of the ocean and Oahu’s famous Diamond Head State Monument. Some of the most popular beach activities in this area include snorkeling, surfing, and sunbathing. Waikiki beach is a great place for beginner surfers, who can enjoy lessons in a fun, vibrant atmosphere. Other popular ways to explore the Pacific include canoeing, stand-up paddle boarding, and water tricycling.

Waimea Bay
Waimea Bay, located on the north shore of Oahu, is one of the most popular winter surfing spots in the United States. This beach is notorious for its large waves in the winter—in fact, Waimea Bay is historically the birthplace of big-wave surfing. Waimea Bay hosts a variety of world-class surfing competitions, including The Vans Triple Crown of Surfing and the Quicksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau competition. The waters of Waimea Bay calm down in the summer, offering beachgoers a more serene retreat for snorkeling and swimming. Waimea Bay features full facilities, making it a popular destination for families and singles alike.

Yokohama Bay
Located on Oahu’s western coast, Yokohama Bay is a popular secluded sunbathing spot that is rarely crowded, making it an excellent retreat for those wishing to avoid the bustle of busier beaches. Yokohama Bay is well known for its picture-perfect shore and waters, which stand out against the stunning backdrop of the Wai’anae Mountain Range. It is also a popular surfing location and one of the better places to spot dolphins out at sea. Hikers can take the trail from Kaena Beach State Park up to Kaena point, which offers scenic views of the island and the ocean from its lava shoreline.

Lanikai Beach
If you’re looking to visit one of the consistently top-ranked beaches in the world, head over to Lanikai Beach on Oahu’s eastern shore. Lanikai Beach’s sparkling white sand and calm, clear waters make it a picturesque retreat for swimmers, sunbathers, and picnickers. Two nearby islands, called the Mokuluas, are easily accessible via kayak. Although Lanikai Beach is small, it is easily accessible through public beach access paths and has been deemed one of the best places on the island to watch the full moon rise against the backdrop of the Mokuluas.
