Enjoying Natural Décor in Your City Apartment

Renting an apartment in fast-paced Los Angeles doesn’t mean leaving your favorite elements of nature behind. There are many ways you can bring nature into your trendy, modern apartment to enjoy a more organic and natural approach to interior décor.

Flowers and Plants
Plants are a simple way to bring a bit of nature into your apartment. Keeping fresh flowers in the kitchen, turning a potted plant into a centerpiece, or growing a small garden of succulents in your bathroom are all easy ways to enjoy a greener, brighter, and even healthier apartment. Indoor plants can turn a cold, dark, or imposing space into one that is much more vibrant, positive, and inviting. Live plants also help to remove toxins from the air, improving the air quality inside your apartment so you can enjoy every breath you take. Even if you don’t want to use live plants or freshly-cut flowers, realistic faux plants can offer many of the same decorative benefits without the upkeep of live greenery.

Photos and Paintings
Another great way you can bring nature home is through the artwork you hang on your walls. Select photos or paintings of your favorite landscapes or animals and sprinkle these throughout your home to add a touch of the outdoors to your indoor space. The larger you go with your artwork, the more it will command attention and influence the rest of your décor. Don’t be afraid to take elements from your artwork, such as colors, textures, or themes, and continue them throughout your living space to create a cohesive look centered around your favorite animals or places.

Natural Materials
Choosing décor that features natural materials can also help to imbue your apartment home with a sense of the outdoors. Furnishings made from unfinished or reclaimed wood can offer either a rugged or refined look to set the stage for additional décor. Accent pieces made of glass or polished stone are easy to find and can fit in with any decorative scheme to draw the eye and brighten your living space. Even if you prefer a very modern-style apartment, a glass bowl filled with tumbled stones or a driftwood paperweight can provide the perfect contrast to balance your décor with just a touch of the natural world.

Creating a Designer Master Bedroom

Your master bedroom is one of the most important rooms in your apartment. This peaceful retreat should be a place where you feel comfortable and relaxed, providing the perfect setting for you to get a restful night’s sleep. Regardless of your bedroom budget, there are many ways you can create a luxurious designer master bedroom in your Wahiawa apartment home.

Linens
The best place to begin designing your ideal master bedroom is the bed. A comfortable bed sets the stage for higher-quality sleep while also acting as a stylistic anchor for the rest of the room. Choose good quality sheets for your bed—they’ll be worth it—and make sure you have a bedcover that is light or heavy enough for you to sleep comfortably, depending on the season. Wash your sheets regularly (most experts suggest at least once a month, if not more often) and replace them entirely when they become worn to keep your bed looking beautiful and feeling clean and comfortable. Pillows should be washed twice a year and fluffed in the dryer on air cycle or low heat. With regular washing, pillows can last ten years or more, but don’t hesitate to replace them if they’re getting thin, worn, or otherwise uncomfortable.

Lighting
Proper lighting can transform your bedroom into a functional and relaxing space. Start by ensuring the room has enough ambient light so you can complete tasks such as getting ready for bed or getting dressed in the morning comfortably. Place lamps in areas where they will do the most good, such as in corners or near walls where light will be reflected back into the room, making this space feel warmer and more inviting. Although you’ll want to ensure the room has sufficient lighting, consider using bulbs of slightly lower wattage than those in the living areas of your apartment. Studies have found that getting ready for bed in a lower-light environment can help your body and mind wind down for higher-quality sleep. If you like to read in bed, make sure you have a focused light source near your bed, such as a lamp placed on a nightstand, to avoid eye strain. Similarly, any work or task areas in the room, such as a desk or reading nook, should also have dedicated lighting for comfort and convenience.

Décor
Although you may not spend much time in your bedroom, there is no reason to leave this area of your apartment lacking in décor. Some of the easiest and most popular decorative elements for the bedroom include rugs, artwork, plants, and lights. Tying artwork and rugs in with the color scheme or pattern of your linens will make this room feel more like a completed whole, while plants bring a softer element of nature into this relaxing space. Lighting and lamps can be used for decorative purposes as well as functional ones—consider using string lights or hanging lanterns for an additional soft glow that adds whimsy and personality to your master bedroom.
