Things to Do in Houston

As the fourth largest city in the United States, Houston offers a host of exciting opportunities and luxury living experiences. In 2012, Houston earned the number one ranking on Forbes’ list of America’s Coolest Cities To Live. This incredibly cosmopolitan and youthful city contains elements of history, art, and science that provide a unique lineup of adventures available for pursuit on any given day of the year.

Battleship Texas
Located within minutes of downtown Houston sits the Battleship Texas, which became the first battleship museum in the United States when it opened in 1948. The Texas took part in both World War I and World War II, and today is permanently anchored in La Porte. Visitors can take a self-guided tour of the ship that includes the flying bridge, engine room, sleeping quarters, and medical facilities. For those who want to venture into the less frequently-seen parts of the ship, there is also a hard hat guided tour and even the opportunity to sleep overnight and experience life as a sailor in World War II. Annual events at the Texas include Pearl Harbor Day and Yuletide Texas Christmas decorations. However, this historic monument also holds an added feature: it is considered haunted and the ship is a much sought-after site for many paranormal investigators.

Miller Outdoor Theater
The Miller Outdoor Theater in Hermann Park provides professional-caliber performances free to the public—in fact, it is the largest free theater program in the country. Performances run March through October and include concerts, plays, acrobatic performances, and more. The Miller Outdoor Theater has hosted outdoor events such as Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, the Houston Grand Taiko Festival, the Houston Shakespeare Festival, and the Chinese Golden Dragon Acrobats. Guests are allowed to bring their own meals for a pre-show picnic on the lawn. Shows often offer first-come first-serve assigned seating beneath the covered portion of the theater, which includes 20 wheelchair spaces and more than 1,000 seats. The surrounding lawn is large enough to host crowds upward of 4,500 comfortably.

Space Center Houston
America’s unique and highly-successful space program hinges on to-the-minute management of spacecraft and astronauts in orbit. Visitors and residents of Houston have the unique opportunity to see where this happens at Space Center Houston, which is home to NASA Mission Control. Exploring Space Center Houston provides a full day of education and entertainment that includes attractions such as the International Space Station Gallery, an interactive presentation about what life is like in space, and a tour of Building 9, where engineers and astronauts are currently working on today’s space projects and programs. You’ll also have the opportunity to view both the current Mission Control facility that coordinates operations at the International Space Station and the historic building from which Gemini and Apollo spacecraft were monitored. One special event the Space Center offers that you should consider adding to your day is scheduling an unforgettable catered lunch with one of NASA’s current astronauts.
