Easy Steps for a More Organized Closet

Your one-, two-, or three-bedroom Broomfield apartment at Alta Harvest Station features a variety of luxury amenities, including large walk-in closets. Maintaining an organized closet will make the most use of this amazing space, reducing tripping hazards, keeping your clothing in better shape, and making getting dressed and out the door on time in the mornings much easier.

Pre-Sort Your Laundry
Laundry sorters are a great tool that will save you time on laundry day. You can make trips down the hall to your personal full-size washer and dryer even easier by tossing your laundry into a sorter, rather than piling it into one huge basket or bin. Laundry sorters are typically taller and narrower than traditional laundry baskets, meaning they’ll take up less space in your closet as well. Some even come with a lid or covering, allowing you to keep them in another area of your bedroom without affecting the look of the room.

Rotate Your Clothes
You don’t need to keep your summertime shorts and tank tops in your closet during the winter any more than you’ll need that heavy wool sweater in July. Rotating your clothes into and out of your closet by season is by far one of the best ways to reduce clutter and make it easier to find the clothes you want each morning. Use your computer, smartphone, or wall calendar to mark dates each year when you will plan to rotate your wardrobe, or just follow the weather and rotate when the time seems right. Store your out-of-season clothes in plastic bins or vacuum bags to keep them dirt- and dust-free; many bins can be stored under your bed to keep them close by but out of sight.

Pare Down Your Wardrobe
Most people own far more clothes than they wear. You can reduce clutter in your closet—and make room for new clothes—by paring down your wardrobe once or twice a year. Start by hanging all your hangers the “wrong” way in your closet, with the curve of the hanger on the back side of the pole, rather than the front. Every time you wear a piece of clothing, turn its hanger around so you’ll know it’s been worn. At the end of the season when it’s time to rotate your clothes, take a look at the items still hanging the wrong way. These should be the first items you consider for donation. Additionally, avoid keeping any clothing that doesn’t fit, whether it is too large or too small. Even if you are working toward a weight loss goal, consider rewarding yourself with new clothing and donating the old to keep your closet cleaner in the meantime.
