Tips for Living in an Apartment with Your Canine Companion

Denver is one of the most pet-friendly cities in the United States, so it is a wonderful place to call home if you are deciding where to move with your four-legged friend. While apartment living with pets is generally considered a challenge, it is possible to find happiness for you and your pet when you know what to look for in a pet friendly apartment in Denver. Here are just a few tips for choosing the right dog and community for the comfort of you and your pet.

Select the right breed
If you are planning on adopting a dog once you find your new apartment, you might select a dog from a lower-energy breed. Pugs, greyhounds, mastiffs, and Boston terriers all top the list of the most apartment-friendly dogs because they are lower-energy breeds that tend to keep the noise down. Basset hounds and bulldogs are also tame dog breeds to consider, but they can be fairly loud when they start barking.

Look for dog-friendly accommodations
In some cases, you can negotiate a pet agreement into a lease at an apartment community that does not typically welcome pets. However, you will find lower-stress arrangements in communities that readily welcome dogs and cats. At Alta Alameda Station, we not only allow canine residents, but we pamper them with a dog washing station and community dog park.

Opt for a first-floor unit
Living on the first floor will give you direct access to the outdoors, making it easier to bring your dog outside for potty breaks and walks. If you are set on living on a higher floor, there are some indoor solutions like training pads and portable patches of grass that can save you time on trips outside.

Use indoor activities and exercises
You do not always have to bring your dog outside to ensure that he is getting enough exercise. After a long work day, you can keep your dog entertained with a laser pointer. Simply point the laser pointer at different areas of the floor and watch your dog chase the light excitedly. For a more involved indoor exercise experience, you can set up an obstacle course for your curious dog to navigate. Mental exercise is also important to keep your dog from getting bored, so you might train your dog to do some new tricks or start playing hide-and-seek with treats instead of simply handing them to your dog.

Hire a dog walker
Even if you give your canine regular exercise and take daily trips to the dog park, he might get bored when he is cooped up all day. To prevent the development of bad habits like chewing, howling, or scratching, you might consider a doggy daycare service or local dog walker to entertain your furry friend while you are at work. Alternatively, you might set up doggy daycare arrangements within your community when you live among fellow per lovers.
